Caring through masks

Allium Healthcare has introduced the Caring through Masks initiative where professional care staff will wear a photo of their smiling face at heart level to provide warmth to elderly residents despite safe distancing measures. The organisation shared that according to research, such portraits have the potential to humanise care and form a personal connection between care providers and residents. This is especially crucial during the pandemic, as the masks may affect the staff’s ability to communicate to the residents.

“Wearing masks is essential for the safety of elderly residents but it limits our ability to connect them. It becomes a bigger issue when we communicate with elderly residents who have speech or hearing issues. A personal connection is extremely important to the emotional well-being of elderly. It is crucial for them to feel comforted especially in these tough times where there is a reduction in physical activities and safe distancing measures,” said Jessie Ng, care concierge, Allium Healthcare.

Allium Healthcare offers residential care, day care, home care as well as caregiver support.
